highwaySTAR Careers: Careers for Drivers

Most of you will have heard about SCR by now, but there's still more than a little mystery to Selective Catalytic Reduction -- that's the NOx reduction strategy of choice for five out of the six North American heavy-duty engine makers going into two thousand and ten.

At this point, SCR looks like a good news story overall. It's a proven technology. It's widely used by most of the heavy-duty engine makers in Europe and it's been in service there for more than five years, but it's not all rosy.

And there will be some extra chassis weight involved, maybe up to 400 lbs. And that's on top of the weight we added going into 2007. That will be an issue for the truck makers to solve, or maybe the EPA and the DOT will finally come to their senses and grant these new EPA 2007 and 2010 trucks a thousand pounds of latitude on the steer and drive axles.

And it will cost more, of course; probably in a range similar to what we saw going into 2007. But this time around the extra cost comes is widely expected to come with a payback: improved fuel economy.

To drivers, SCR will be all but transparent, and that's good news. Hardly anymore manual regen events, and nothing else to worry about, save for keeping the diesel exhaust tank full. At roughly 200 miles to a gallon, that shouldn't prove to be a serious challenge either.
