Trucking Stats Announced for 2006
In statistics it announced last month, the U.S. Census Bureau said truck transportation and warehousing in the U.S. was up to $312 billion for 2006, an increase of 19 billion from the prior year.

In its report, the Census Bureau said commercial truckers drove 91 billion miles in 2006 and accounted for $220 billion of the $312 billion total. More than two-thirds of that amount was realized through long-distance trucking and the remaining $67.9 billion through local trucking.

In general, the report showed, revenues in subsectors within trucking and warehousing climbed during the 2006 year across the board.  Local freight trucking showed the greatest increase with a 12.3 percent growth from the prior year.

The Census Bureau said the bulk of trucking revenues for the came from trucking activities within the U.S. (96 percent). The balance was for cross-border truck transportation with Canada and Mexico, predominantly, and totaled about $8 billion.

While a similar report from the American Trucking Associations (ATA) showed 2006 trucking at more than $645 billion, the discrepancy is because the two groups report findings differently. The ATA report includes private trucking which is said to account for about half of all trucking revenue.
