3/4/08 In Pennsylvania, public hearings are being held on proposed regulations that would limit truck idling statewide. The rule, proposed by the Environmental Quality Board, restricts commercial diesel-powered vehicles from idling for more than five minutes per hour. According to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in Pennsylvania, the approximately 13,000 long-haul trucks idling in the state for more than 15 minutes adds up to more than 22 million hours each year. The bulk of the idling occurs during the mandatory trucker resting periods. The DEP says by creating an idling restriction, more than 20 million gallons of diesel fuel would be saved annually. |
