A report out last month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that the number of truck-related fatalities dropped to fewer than 5,000. The milestone is the first time the number has been that low in five years.
The new number, 4,995, was 4.7 percent lower than the numbers reported in 2005, when 5,240 deaths were reported. The last time the number of fatalities was below 5,000 was in 2002 when 4,939 deaths were reported.
